Five Positions of Control

Gossen helps us understand discipline and behavior through a chart that explains why people behave as they do. It describes various roles that teachers and parents use to discipline students and children. The roles include: Punisher, Guilter, Buddy, Monitor, and Manager. The Manager role encourages intrinsic motivation. Gossen teaches that the Manager role is one that fosters self-respect and self-control. It is best to begin with the Manager role. If students do not respond to the questions and insist on violating the beliefs or social contract agreed on by the group the teacher should then weave into the Monitor role and institute a consequence. The Monitor consequences are "extrinsicly" motivating. The Manager "intrinsicly" motivates the student by inviting him/her to behave in a way that is based on what "we believe in our school." The other roles (Punisher, Guilter and Buddy) are roles that educators often find themselves playing out, but they are not effective in leaving a legacy of student self-control.
