Some attempt to define leadership by a list of characteristics. Others define it as hierarchical. Still others in a participatory context.
What seems to be emerging is the need for leaders, at any level, to combine clear aspirations of what the organization is trying to become, with skills and dispositions to energize a productive staff and constant attention on meeting or exceeding the needs of students and the parents/community.

|
Leadership is a subset of human action. It must attend to expending energy towards the aspirations of the system and to skill and methods to build collective commitment of others. Leaders in action make public the aspirations, model behaviors consistent with it, support-encourage-coach others, and have a clear sense as well as skill in developing consensus as appropriate. |
