Improving Instructional Data & Feedback Concept @ Work...Behavior First, Then Attitude
Heather Gamble, one of the 3rd grade teachers gasped. "Oh my! It appears we have a lot of students scoring well below where we want them." John Pitts followed, "It certainly appears so, but I'd like to know who is seriously below where we want them—is there a way to show that data? Jolene turned to her laptop and flashed up this chart from her Excel file:

Baseline Performance, 2003-04

"This graph shows us the breakdown of student performance. Using the Fall norms we see that 38 of our 66 students are below the 50th percentile. That number goes to 59 students using the Spring norms, which is what we must show progress against next May. That means we have 58% of our 3rd graders below our bottom line. Looking at our Spring norm chart, we have an 'L' shaped curve. Our job is to move the 'L' to a 'J' shaped curve by May. Let's talk about what we can do."

The 3rd team member, Kathy Gleason, chimed in: "We all sensed that we were dealing with a fairly low group but this confirms it. We need to find ways of working with these low performers."
