After more discussion it was decided that they first needed to find out if their existing reading program improved reading fluency for their 3rd graders. Jolene introduced the concept of sampling: "We need to regularly monitor the impact of this program but asking you and the students to do fluency probes weekly or even bi-weekly in unfair and unrealistic. Instead, lets take the square root of 66, which rounded is 8, and sample 8 students every week to find out if, over time, our reading program is improving fluency for all the kids."
Jolene then showed them an Excel file where they could input the scores each week:

"Each week we will record the scores for each student who is randomly selected for the reading probe. We will check back once every 4 weeks and see how things are progressing. We will also plan on a class-wide reading probe mid-year to give us a better picture of how we are doing. Knowing you are all very busy, I've asked our AEA psychologist, Calvin Carlson, to come in once a week to conduct the probes. In the meantime, I want the three of you to work together and find ways of providing our low-performers with extra assistance. Does this sound like a workable plan?"
The team agreed and the meeting broke up.
