"Let's take a look at individual students. I'm concerned about how our program is helping the low-performers and want to discuss it with you," said John. He showed the graph below. "Notice our worst performers. At least 9 of our worst performers have showed very little improvement and, quite honestly, had the most room to grow. There are 5 who were among the low-performers that I circled in red which have shown very nice gains. As I look at the other students I get the sense that our reading program works pretty well for the average and above average students but I'm not sure what to make of it for the others."
Heather jumped in. "Having the group of low-performers, I have concerns also. I see the low-performers continue to struggle and more time and effort don’t seem to be helping. The five who have shown more improvement are the same five whose parents expressed the most concern and willingness to help at home when we shared the data with them. Is there something we can look at that might help the low performers who might not be getting that same level of support outside of school?"

With only four months left and several students still struggling the team decided to call in the AEA's reading specialists. After a meeting with them they began to explore a different program that had shown to be successful in similar contexts. The specialists warned them not to expect dramatic change immediately as it would take the team time to get proficient at implementing the new strategy.
