Cultural Lens Activity

It is important that educators understand that:
  1. everyone participates in a culture,
  2. culture helps us define who we are, and
  3. culture can be defined in terms of general concepts ( food, clothing, customs, religion, art, language, traditions, etc.)

Ask participants to individually record aspects of culture in the "looking glass" handout. Facilitate a discussion of aspects of culture and how these aspects might change your view of the world.

Brainstorm aspects of your culture that can easily be observed. Record them on the small portion of the iceberg form that is above the water. Brainstorm aspects of your culture that cannot be observed and are more difficult to identify or understand.

Facilitate a follow-up discussion of the following:

  • Things you can observe about culture.
  • Things you can know.
  • Things that impact teaching and learning.
