Where to Place the Ad |

The standard location for teaching positions in Iowa remains the want ads in the Des Moines Register. These ads can cost $500 or more for one weekend. Districts often also advertise in local or regional newspapers.

Online Ads |

Online resources are growing in popularity. Many districts have web sites in which vacancies may be listed, and applications and information about the application process may be found. The Iowa Association of School Boards offers a free online candidate-to-district application service. One web service that is growing in popularity in Iowa is IAREAP.

In your ads, be sure to cite an application deadline and the abbreviation "EOE" indicating you are an Equal Opportunity Employer. Also, in providing materials to candidates, be sure to cite... |

- that you are an EOE and,
- how candidates may request accommodation in order to participate in the hiring process.

Capitalizing on Your District Assets |
Capitalize on the assets of your district. Do you have competitive salaries? Small class sizes? Award-winning programs? Great location? We in Iowa don't often tout our best qualities. Ask yourself, "What would draw me to our district?" and find a way to highlight it briefly in your ad. |
