Listening and Learning from Irate Parents: Follow-up

Parents an Elem. Principal's Perspective Tip

Your follow through with the parents is a crucial final (we hope) step. Before the date you agreed upon with the parent, contact the parents to let them know what will be happening to make things better for their child. Assure them their child's safety and wellbeing and the safety and wellbeing of the other children were paramount in everyone's mind as plans were made and decisions reached. Thank them again for bringing the problem to you and ask them to keep you informed.

Calendar, design onlyLast step of the follow through (I was in my educational career many years before I learned to do this step.), mark a date on your calendar to contact the parents to see how things are going for their child. If you haven't heard anything, things are probably going well, but you deserve to hear that good news from the parents after all the time and energy you have put into helping their child! You may be pleasantly surprised by how appreciative the parents are you checked back with them!
