Establishing a comprehensive, ongoing communication system is vital to successful parent/school relations. Components include: |
- handbooks,
- calendars,
- web pages,
- letters,
- parent advisory meetings,
- open house,
- parent conferences,
- newsletters, and
- many other somewhat standard school/home communications.

These publications need to be aimed at both students and parents. "Us versus them" language should be avoided. The publications and events need to convey a service orientation.
Start by ascertaining existing means of communication. Put together a task force of parents. Ask them about meaningful communication and information families count on. Ask for opinions about handbook formats, web page components, open house format, and parent conferences. After this dialog, develop a comprehensive plan that provides ongoing, meaningful communication. |
