It is important for the principal to facilitate communication between classroom teachers and parents. Progress reporting has come a long way with access to technology. Most student information systems have electronic grade book packages that allow teachers to send regular reports home to all parents, not just those that are getting “F” grades. Not just at the “midterm.”
Today’s busy family lifestyles make parents increasingly dependent on non-traditional communication channels. An electronic grade book and progress-reporting program can save time for both teachers and parents. It takes just a few minutes each week for teachers to send updates on grades, projects, and assignments.
An internet-based program is also very convenient for both teachers and parents. School calendars, class assignments, course syllabi, and other information are accessible from home or work for parents and students. This accessibility builds the school community and heightens the level of trust between school and home.
Perhaps the most important aspect of electronic progress reporting or web-based information system is the conversation stimulus for parents and students. The information gives parents an excuse to talk about school with their children. Informed parents can be effective partners to assist with motivation and accountability. Uninformed parents cannot.
