Service Orientation
Reacting to Parent Concerns

Secondary schools tend to look heavily at the content training and expertise that a teaching candidate possesses. It is also imperative for every staff member to possess solid interpersonal skills, that they view their profession as a mission to serve children, and that they do not develop a “bunker” mentality every time a parent asks a question.

Remind your staff to ask themselves two questions in this regard:

  1. How would we react if our own children were in the given situation?
  2. How do we want to be treated at the doctor's office, grocery store, or city hall?
As educators, we aren’t doing someone a favor by teaching. Educators are driven by a mission to serve children. Yes, the public tends to under appreciate teachers but taking the positive approach to working with parents reinforces the mission to successfully work with students.
