It is vital that there is a concerted effort to protect student due process rights. Notifying students and parents about procedural due process is important in minimizing potential problems. The student handbook should highlight and define due process in a concise manner as follows:
"Students will be given: oral and/or written notice of charges, the opportunity to admit or deny such charges, and an explanation of the evidence against the student."
Parent communication is essential when discipline or attendance issues develop. A timely, proactive phone call to a parent is highly recommended with minor and major incidents. In serious incidents, it is recommended that parents are present when students are confronted with accusations, evidence, and possible consequences.
Consistency with due process sends a powerful message of fairness to parents, students, and the community. Attention to due process details adds professionalism to the school-home relationship effort.
