Co-curricular Eligibility
School Environment

Parents a Secondary Principal's Perspective Web Link
The co-curricular eligibility policy is a highly scrutinized and tested document in most schools. Parents, students, and staff should be heavily involved in the development and ongoing review of the policy.

Many policies have evolved into systems that depend heavily on law enforcement and court system notification. Policies that rely on police notification send the message to parents and students that the principal cannot patrol the city twenty-four hours per day but that the school holds high expectations for students that represent the school. It is important, however, that the school communicates that the school will investigate compelling information when it is presented.

Student and parent(s) should sign and return a form that indicates that they have read and understand the policy. The consequences for violations should be clearly outlined in this policy. Sample policies and notification letters can be found on the School Administrators of Iowa web site.
