Principals new to a school are encouraged to discuss the school’s environment with parents, students and staff in focus groups prior to the first day of school. A discussion based upon “what are the positive things about this high school” and “how could this high school be better” should give the new principal plenty of ideas for his/her mission in this regard. Focus groups are not only useful tools, they send the message that you care about what parents think and that you want them to be partners in shaping the future of the school.
