Hiring Committees
School Environment

Try to include parents and students in the hiring process for visible, all-school positions. This would include administrative positions, counseling positions, music directors, and some head coaching positions. The purpose is to reinforce the notion that this is “our” school and we are seeking to maintain and enhance excellence. Giving parents an inside look at how the school does business is powerful and expands the number of supporters in the school network.

Facilitating this process can be tricky, however. It is important to define roles and clarify the process. One suggestion is to have two processes that involve screening interviews and final interviews. This generally involves different two sets of parents. It is recommended to outline the process for all persons involved, tell them that each member will be asked to provide written feedback, and that each committee will not be voting for “their” candidate.
