Student Input
School Environment

There should be formal and informal channels for student input on important decisions in the school. Established entities such as student government or student advisories should have access to the administration and not just serve as a social committee for dance planning and other student life planning. Elected student government leaders should have a chance to engage in a two-way exchange with the principal several times a year.

Many times, elected students governments are not representative of the “real” student body. Student Advisories comprised of an all-volunteer corps of students that agree to meet with the principal for pizza or doughnuts once per quarter to discuss school policies, rules, procedures and school improvement can be a way to broaden representation. Some schools have both student councils and student advisories.

Other forms of input can come in the form of surveys administered in homerooms, public forums with interested students on specific topics, or electronic messaging through a school web site or email system.
