Introduction

Parents and educators have one very important thing in common...
  • both have invested in student success.
  • both want students to reach their potential as well-rounded young adults.
While conflicting perspectives may interfere with sound judgment and lead to emotionally charged exchanges, it is imperative that a secondary school principal foster positive relationships between home and school. Students are the beneficiaries of these efforts.

While each community is unique, there are many things that can be done to establish a positive culture inside the school walls and in the community to assist with the effort to successfully deal with parents. The task is to proactively put into place programs and policies that make the school parent-friendly and, at the same time, prepare principals to react professionally to situations that may develop.

This look at working with parents at the secondary school level is divided into:
  • proactive communication,
  • building a positive school environment, and
  • reacting to parent concerns.
It is a fairly direct look at what we do in our school, our beliefs, and recommendations related to positive parent relations. It is based on experience, not theory. It is meant for the practitioner who works each day to make his/her school a better place for students.

It is often said by veteran administrators that being a principal would be an easy job if they could control the actions/behaviors of all of their students and staff members both at school and in the community. Unfortunately, the interpersonal dynamics of the comprehensive secondary school are complex. For the record, secondary principals do not have an easy job.
