Five Whys?

School Improvement Resources
Wht? Why? Why? Why? Why? design onlyUse the Five Whys? when you want to explore the root cause or meaning of a problem or situation. When people "think" they know the problem, but may not truly understand the situation, it is helpful to engage a team in the "Five Whys?" process.

Ask Why? Five times. Why?

  • It causes people to think deeper about the issue at hand.
  • It causes people to challenge the current level of thinking.
  • It can help a team to build a common understanding of the issues that affect the situation.
It is important that a team knows when they are engaged in a "Five Whys?" process. If you don't inform your group of the process, asking "Why?" so many times may build defensiveness and simply annoy people!
