The Administrator's Question
I'm new in this job, but don't want to appear "new at it." What do I do?

That's the dilemma...having so many questions and yet wanting to appear confident and competent as an administrator. With the pace of change today, it doesn't matter too much if you're brand new in your role or if you've got 25+ of experience. All administrators are feeling a little perplexed about the challenge of meeting the demands for accountability at the same time you do what's right for kids.

In your case, being a new administrator may actually be an advantage. You may be more willing to listen to advice and more objective with the data that you use to analyze what's right and what needs improvement in your building and/or district.

Remember, the path to school improvement is not a linear one--it's messy and often has detours. There is more than one right answer. There is more than one path. As you embark upon the journey to your destiny it's important to remember that you must utilize all the resources at your disposal including the experience and knowledge of your staff and community to help you frame your unique context, data that helps you understand your system's strengths and vulnerabilities, the wisdom of your peers from around the state, and finally, this website which offers tools and processes which may help to remove the obstacles between knowing and doing.

Whatever you learn, consider sharing that learning with others!
