Acting on Results

School Improvement Resource
As you write your Annual Progress Report for distribution to the Iowa Department of Education and your community, be sure to write a plan for improvement that inspires you and your staff for the following year. Use a variety of data sources to create synthesis statements regarding student achievement, student behavior, the quality of your programs, and demographics.

The following checklist may be used to guide the writing of your next annual plan for improvement or your five-year comprehensive plan:

What is the desired state? What should we do and why?
The desired state should be:
  • Aligned with mission/vision/beliefs/values.
  • Supportive of teaching for learning.
  • Customer focused.
  • Research supported.
  • Descriptive of what you're for, rather than against.
  • Measurable.

What is the current reality? How do we know?
When collecting evidence of your current reality you'll need:
  • Perception data (feeling = fact).
  • Process and effort data (frequency/duration data).
  • Outcome data (evidence of bottom-line results).

How can we close the gap?
Use these questions to test your strategies:
  • Are the strategies congruent with your values and beliefs?
  • Do your strategies focus on systems improvement?
  • Are the strategies within your scope of control?
  • Are the strategies the best way to close the gap (research based)?
  • Who is assigned to key roles and responsibilities for implementation?
  • What resources are identified in support of the work?

How will we know if the plan is working?
Include in the plan:
  • How you'll assess the plan before the end?
  • How you'll decide if you need to make adjustments?
  • What data you'll collect along the way?
  • How you'll keep various stakeholders informed and about progres?

What did we learn?
Include a plan for holding the gains:
  • Document findings.
  • Plan for continuous improvement.
  • Communicate results.
