Feedback by standard is an expectation in a standards-based system (as defined earlier and in Iowa Teaching Standards - Standard 5). Think about a classroom in which the teacher has informed the students of what they are to learn, has instructed in such a manner that the students have had the opportunity to learn, and then assessed so that the student can demonstrate their knowledge attained. It makes sense to then inform the student of their level of achievement with respect to what they were originally told they were going to know and be able to do (standards and benchmarks). With this degree of information, students are able to “take charge” of their own learning. They know which standard and/or benchmark they have attained and which ones represent knowledge on which to continue to work.
At some levels, probably K-5, the alignment, feedback, and communication would be by benchmarks not merely standards. At the secondary level, feedback may be by standard. This is another example of an area for decision-making of district leaders. What are the expectations of the parents? How detailed is their need? How much time and information is needed for parents to understand and appreciate the assessment information provided? |
