Answering some of these questions will help a school or district clarify their purpose and needs before investing in software.

Software Features
  • What technical resources (e.g., server type and size, specifications of desktop computers, technical support staff) will be required to operate the software?

  • Is the software compatible with the current software (e.g., administrative software products) and hardware (e.g., servers, desktop computers) we have in place?

  • Is the software compatible with IBM-compatible and Macintosh computers?

  • Can the software be used on a school- or district-wide network?

  • How much training will users need to use the software proficiently? How much will training the staff cost?

  • Can teachers input data from home?

  • What features are in place to ensure that teachers do not lose data?

  • What security features does the software have?

  • Can students and parents access information about student progress using the software?

  • Is the software designed specifically to facilitate keeping records about student progress on standards?

  • Will the software allow you to import your state or district standards easily?

  • Does the software allow the user to assign scores for multiple standards-based topics for an assessment?

  • Does the software calculate overall grades? Can the method for calculating overall grades be changed? Can the teacher override the software?

  • Can teachers use different grading scales (e.g., a 4-point rubric scale, percentages) to enter scores?

  • What types of reports does the software offer? Are these customizable?

  • What features of the software can a teacher, school, or district customize?

Vendors
  • What kind of customer technical support does the vendor offer at the user level? How much does technical support cost?

  • What kind of after sale support does the vendor offer? Is any training included in the price of a district license? Are optional training packages available?

  • Does the vendor offer a free demonstration version of the software?

  • Does the vendor offer a money-back guarantee?
