The impact of a standards-directed education system on student achievement will only be evident if there is implementation with fidelity by all staff members. Implementation data will assist district leaders with decisions on next steps needed to accomplish a truly standards-directed system. A comprehensive self-inventory is available for your use in this data collection process. The major aspects of this inventory around which a point scale (1=Not Standards-based, 3=In Transition, 5=Standards-based Ideal) is provided, include the following topics: content standards, instruction, assessment, and student learning.
This can be given to teachers for completion on their own as a reflection of their own classroom, as a department committee with respect to their content area, or as a building team to determine a building’s level of implementation. As the inventory is completed, it serves also as a reminder of the vision of standards-based system. The compiled inventories will provide valuable information for district leaders as they direct the staff development planning. Staff development planning can be very specifically directed at the appropriate groups of individuals when the data is also disaggregated by grade spans, buildings, departments, etc. Using this inventory periodically for a couple of years during implementation will help to redirect staff if necessary, but also give staff an understanding of their growth in implementation.
