Maintaining a Balance, continued

School Improvement Concept @ Work
Change is hard. We are creatures that enjoy routine and things that are familiar. We have always done it this way so we fight changing it. The old adage, however, applies:

"If we always do what we have always done we will always get what we have always gotten."

To move forward, however, we need to change from time-to-time. Since our goal is to be less frenzied, we need to learn to "LET GO." We need to maintain balance by letting go of things that no longer serve a purpose. I received a Smith-Corolla typewriter as a graduation gift from my parents and cherished that typewriter for years. In the age of technology, however, I needed to move on. That does not mean that old Smith Corolla is in the landfill; it remains in the back of my closet near a leisure suit and pair of bellbottoms, but I have moved on. "If we try to hold on to the past while moving into the future, we won't have any peace" (Meyer, p 101).

How can we help support staff maintain balance? How can we help them let go of past practices as they acquire new skills? How do we tackle the issues of balance between work and home? How do we build into the workday times to celebrate along with times to learn new strategies and skills? How do we cultivate relationships and support systems both inside and outside the work environment?

"When you decide to make a full commitment to be a positive force, at that very moment you acquire a huge advantage over pessimistic leaders. The advantage is that no human achievement has ever occurred because of pessimism or cynicism. Every monumental accomplishment of humankind, from curing polio to placing the American flag on the moon, was the result of the efforts of optimistic, motivated people who were inspired by someone to go on and who refused to quit even in the temporary darkness of night" (Losoncy, p 225).
