Becoming a Learning Organization

Peter Senge wrote a book in the early 1990’s entitled The Fifth Discipline: The Art and Practice of the Learning Organization. Senge’s core disciplines were personal mastery, mental models, shared vision, team learning, and systems thinking. His idea of systems thinking called upon a body of knowledge and tools that opened our eyes to patterns within organizations that may block the efforts to change and move forward.

It is critical to consider al five disciplines together in any serious search for increasing the quality of educational experience… Senge contends that the ‘new’ leader will fulfill three roles: the designer of settings in which the five disciplines can be promoted; the steward of the shared vision; and the teacher who fosters learning for everyone” (Isaacson, p 44).

Take the three roles listed by Senge and discuss how each member of the administrative team or leadership team views her/his strengths and areas that may need more cultivation.
  • How does our ability to fulfill each role make us better equipped to building a learning organization for all learners in our building regardless of age or position?
  • What can we do as at team to build up our skills in each of the three role area?
  • What should we do first to make a positive impact on our system?
