In the early 1980’s Thomas Peters wrote a book entitled In Search of Excellence. In that book, Peters makes reference to a poem that paints the picture of employees who are high functioning adults who lead productive and meaningful lives outside of the workplace BUT the minute they arrive at work give up all their energy and enthusiasm to assume a mindless position of simply going through the motions of doing their job. Peters states that trust is a key to increased satisfaction in an employee’s job and their performance. Peters states, “Some will abuse it (trust). Three to eight percent…non-believers will give you an infinite number of reasons why workers can’t be trusted” (Peters, p 236-237).
Showing up has little to do with physically being at work on time. Showing up has everything to do with getting employees to see they are part of a teama very important team.
What are the things your school does to instill pride in one’s work? How does your system honor the “behind the scenes” work that goes on every day? Do the employees in your district feel they are a vital part of the team? How do they view their contribution to higher student achievement? |
