- Make changes too fast. With personnel changes, experts advise taking up to 18 months to fill top posts.
- Take too long. Holding off on necessary change is the other extreme and perhaps the number one mistake new superintendents make. Take the lead from the Board and establish "first year expectations" during the time when your contract is being negotiated.
- Replace key people. The best teams often are a mix of "insiders and outsiders."
- Hire the wrong people. This can be a career-buster!
- Try to duplicate a former district. There is no assurance that what works in one place will work in the next.
- Communicate change without the context of vision. New positions, or other changes, are best explained in the context of moving the school forward.
