| Boardsmanship is a continual learning process and it helps to figure out the "sound bites" you want to use, repeatedly, to remind them of their role. Superintendents can remind the board, "You set the policy, establish direction, work with a broad brush. Our job is to do the work for you, to fill in the details, to make it all happen. You're the driver, we're the team of work horses." |

Nothing takes the place of well-written board policy. Policies set the standard for decision making. Boards that consistently follow policy keep themselves, and their superintendent, out of trouble! When a difficult issue presents itself, the first question the superintendent asks is, "What is our policy?" That policy is the foundation for the superintendent's recommendation to the board. When a board decision is challenged, the board's analysis is, "Did we follow our policy?" If conditions or circumstances change, and the Board believes the policy no longer meets the needs of the students and families of the district, they may choose to review the policy, using their regular policy review process, Policy changes should never occur "on the spot," in the process of making a decision.
The Iowa Association of School Boards offers a Policy Primer and is a service superintendents and Boards of Education may choose to utilize. |
